Mastering Self-Promotion: A Guide for Small Business Owners

If you’re a small business owner managing your own social media, you might feel a little awkward promoting your products or services. Putting yourself out there can feel uncomfortable, and the idea of “selling” might make you cringe. But here’s the truth—if you don’t talk about your business, how will people know what you offer?

As a social media manager, I help take the pain out of self-promotion by crafting engaging content that feels natural, not salesy. However, if you’re handling your own social media, there are some strategies that can help you feel more confident about marketing yourself.

1. Reframe Selling as Helping

Instead of thinking about it as “selling,” consider it as sharing valuable solutions. Your product or service exists to solve a problem—let people know how it can help them.

2. Share Stories, Not Just Sales Pitches

People connect with stories more than ads. Share why you started your business, showcase customer success stories, or highlight behind-the-scenes moments. Authenticity builds trust!

3. Educate and Entertain

Not every post needs to be a direct sales pitch. Provide tips, how-tos, or fun facts related to your industry. When you share useful content, people will naturally engage and remember your business.

4. Use Social Proof

Let your customers do the talking! Share testimonials, reviews, and user-generated content to show real people benefiting from your product or service.

5. Make It Personal

People love to buy from people, not faceless brands. Show up on video, post a photo of yourself with a casual caption, or introduce your team. The more relatable you are, the easier it is for customers to connect with you.

6. Use Calls-to-Action (CTAs)

A simple “Click the link in bio,” “DM me for more info,” or “Comment below” can encourage engagement and make it easy for potential customers to take the next step.

7. Be Consistent

The more regularly you post, the more comfortable you’ll become. Set a manageable schedule (even 2–3 times per week) and stick to it.
